UK Student Loan Repayment Plans Explained

Student loan repayments in the UK are collected automatically through PAYE when your income exceeds your plan’s repayment threshold. You repay 9% of everything you earn above the threshold. Postgraduate loans are repaid at 6%.

Repayment Thresholds 2025/26

Plan 1 (pre-2012 England/Wales, all NI/Scotland): £24,990/yr. Plan 2 (post-2012 England/Wales): £27,295/yr. Plan 4 (Scotland post-2021): £31,395/yr. Plan 5 (from 2023): £25,000/yr.

When Are Loans Written Off?

Plan 1 loans are written off 25 years after the April you were first due to repay (or at age 65, whichever is first). Plan 2 loans are written off after 30 years. Plan 5 loans are written off after 40 years. Remaining balances are cancelled — you won’t owe anything further.
